Community Organizer Position Description

Classification:    Exempt, Full-Time

Reports to:           Executive Director

Compensation: $28,000 - $34,000, based upon qualifications; excellent healthcare benefits and vacation

 Summary 

Foster Advocates is seeking a Community Organizer to connect, elevate and strengthen the organizing capacity of our growing network of leaders impacted by foster care and allies. The Community Organizer will bring their expertise in organizing and commitment to foster care leadership to connect and grow our foster care community in the Twin Cities, as well as, to build our emerging Fostering Advocacy Fellowship.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Grow our community of youth activists and adult supporters, increasing engagement, accelerating shared learning, forging new connections, and raising up priority issues

  • Manage variety of social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter

  • Partner with staff and board to identify and recruit new partners in order to grow our network

  • Collaborate with staff and advisory committee to implement and design fellowship program

  • Manage Fostering Advocacy Fellows – a cohort of foster care leaders from around the state of Minnesota. Responsibilities include coordinating the training institute, facilitating monthly community building & skill share opportunities, and providing Fellow-led trainings

  • Plan, develop curriculum for, and co-lead occasional trainings and outreach events

  • Provide support in fundraising, policy, and research as needed

Desired Qualifications

  • Have direct experience supporting or coordinating organizing efforts, including base building, issue identification, strategy development, and execution of campaigns

  • Uphold Foster Advocates’ vision that those closest to a problem are the closest to solving them

  • Can demonstrate success in the design and delivery of workshops and trainings

  • Have lived experience in foster care and/or experience with child welfare systems

  • Demonstrate commitment to the philosophy of youth as leaders in deciding and advancing their own priority issues and have a passion for working with young people

  • Have an understanding of racial, disability, LGBTQ, gender equity, and have an appreciation for how these identities intersect and impact people’s lives

  • Have strong communication (written and verbal), interpersonal, and organizational skills

  • Are experienced social media users, with the experience and/or capability to manage, engage, build and mobilize our online community of youth leaders and allies

  • Are disciplined, can work independently, and are goal oriented
